I will be answering the question “Is the Merchant of Venice an antisemitic play?” Antisemitism is discrimination towards Jews. There are many instances where antisemitism is shown in this play. The first instance we see of antisemitism is Jews getting tossed of a bridge into a canal. They are called names and are also spat on. The Jews were being abused by Christians. This is because in 1596 Jews were seen as money lenders. This goes against Christianity. I will be using Quotes form other researchers, and exploring both both of views on this. The Jews were used as scapegoats by Hitler. He blamed them for losing the world war one and for the economic crisis Germany was going through. By blaming the Jews for all the country’s problem he breathe life into antisemitism.Hitler use propaganda saying that the Jews were rich and hoard their money while Germans were suffering in poverty which was caused by them.

Venetian Hypocrisy
I think that B is the right quote for the picture.
“…I do wonder, thou naughty jailer, that thou art so fond to come abroad with him at his request.”
In this scene Shylock reveled the truth about the justice system. Other people in the play are trying to accuse Shylock for being barbarios. This is because Shylock wants to take a pound of Antonio’s flesh. Shylock then comes back by telling Antonio that they buy slaves for them selves which is an actual living person. He then continues to tell them that slaves are treated as “asses, dogs and mules” which shows that the Christians treat slaves as an animal. Shylock also uses rhetorical questions to make his point like “What judgement shall I dread, doing no wrong?” This quote shows that Shylock has nothing to apologise for. This evidence is backed up because Shylock and Antonio made a “bond”.
Is the merchant of Venice anti-semetic
I believe that the merchant of Venice is anti-semetic. The first scene we see Christians tossing Jews of a bridge and being spat on. The Christians call them discriminating names. Onward in the play Shylock’s daughter, Jessica, runs away with his money. Shylock then morns this but cares more about his money than his own daughter. This shows the stereo type that Jews are good with money.
Merchant of Venice
The scenes main part was about Potia & Bassiano and Nerissa & Gratiano. The scenes where set in Belmont & Venice.
Battle of Somme (Continued)
After the war, Sir William Robertson, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, explained what this strategy was:
Remembering the dissatisfaction by ministers at the end of 1915, because the operations had not come up to their expectations, the General Staff took the precaution to make quite clear beforehand the nature of success which the Somme campaign might yield. The necessity of relieving pressure on the French Army at Verdun remains, and is more urgent than ever. This is, therefore, the first objective to be obtained by the combined British and French offensive. The second objective is to inflict as heavy losses as possible upon the German armies.
The use of artillery was heavily supported by Field Marshall Haig:
The enemy’s position to be attacked was of a very considerable character, situated on high, undulating tract of ground. (They had) deep trenches….bomb proof shelters……wire entanglements forty yards broad often as thick as a man’s finger. Defences of this nature could only be attacked with the prospect of success after careful artillery preparation
Historical Context (part 2 of 2)
Historical context
Is this description of Portia a good display of how women were like in the 16th century?
Evidence from site:
Women’s role’s during 1500’s-1600’s Women were considered to be the weaker sex, physically and emotionally. It was always thought to be that women needed someone to take care of them. If the woman was married their husband would look after them if they were single their father or brothers would be the ones to look after them. Business Women were not allowed to attend any type of school; they were only allowed to have private tutors at home. They were also not allowed to enter professions such as law, medicine, and politics (ECT.) What they were allowed to do was work as cooks and maids. Basically any type of work that would be considered housework.
Evidence from Shakespeare:
Shakespeare portrays Portia as a very self-controlled person. She tries her best to present her-self as a polite, posh and patient woman. She tries her best to hide her emotions but they get the best of her. Unlike the evidence I got from the site [Above^] Portia has her own maid (Nerissa) to do the cleaning for her. The merchant of Venice doesn’t say if Portia has brothers.
Conclusion:
My conclusion is that Shakespeare’s decryption is mostly accurate to how women lived in the 16th century.
